Those who participate in the Pinocchio Primary school are introduced to Tolkien in Middle Earth Middle School, as we, Peregrins all, set out on the adventure of life together. Pinocchio is one of the most widely recognized fairy tales in the world, and Collodi's "fata" might be seen as an example of the cultural diminution of faerie that Tolkien describes-and laments- as having been popularized as the Middle Ages gave way to the modern period. Accordingly it makes sense to evaluate Pinocchio according to Tolkien's definition of "faerie".
Tolkien is known publicly for the lore of middle earth, but in reality he was a philologist whose aristocratic mother had lost a great deal of material wealth after converting to Catholicism, and Tolkien was reared by a priest along with his brother. His frustration at not being granted a fellowship to write endlessly about fantasy is told in "Leaf by Niggle".
